We read in Don Bosco’s letter from Rome of 1884, “...the greatest cordiality and confidence existed between the boys and the superiors. Familiarity breeds affection and affection breeds confidence”. Indeed this same spirit permeated the Sliema Oratory throughout the 3-day long celebrations of its 101 years since the foundation of the same. This year’s festivity coincided with the 150th anniversary since the beginning of the Salesian Congregation. A special program was organised to underline the moment of grace. Many people— young and old—were busy preparing food and hopping from one activity to the other. Few hours were left for sleep but it was worth the fatigue. New faces and new people, relatively new to the place, have begun the process of formation and made their own the family spirit and have thus identified with the Salesian ethos offered at the Salesian Oratory. Continuity with the past is still a needed reference point but one can say that a new twist in the structure of the Oratory is taking shape: a) synergy with other houses b) a family-oriented ministry towards a holistic approach to youth and c) fully immersed in a digital and cultural-oriented society.
This event was part of the Delegation’s commitment to celebrate the family in view of the 150th anniversary of the Congregation.
